About

DAVID & JAMIE HOLT AGUILAR-RODRÍGUEZ are a married filmmaking duo shaped by their unique backgrounds: David is a bisexual Mexican-American from an outrageous family in Chicago, and Jamie is the great-granddaughter of Hungarian immigrants, raised by Southern storytellers in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Together, they write comedic dramas about flawed outsiders with big dreams learning to love themselves as they battle broken systems and flourish against the odds.

David grew up in a Latino family torn apart by the American Dream. Amidst his family’s turmoil of abuse and financial ruin, David discovered an outlet in making movies with his friends. He longed to be a filmmaker, but after graduating from Harvard with a degree in psychology, the FBI recruited him. Ultimately, though, a life of counter-intelligence wasn’t for David, and he ended up in Corporate America. It paid the bills, but it wasn’t his dream.

But when a severe illness left David on his deathbed, he vowed that if he lived, he would escape cubicle life and pursue his true calling. Spoiler! He lived. David fought back to health and bought a one-way ticket to Hollywood, where he landed a job as Roger Corman’s assistant, quickly proving himself in Peru on Death Race 2050. David went on to earn his MFA in Film & TV Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He is currently the Assistant to Showrunner Alex Kurtzman on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. His award-winning short film “Yo Soy Sally, La Loca!” is now streaming on Underrated.

For Jamie, creativity was the norm growing up with her watercolor artist father and Episcopal youth minister mother. But she always felt like an outsider—an outspoken, punk-rock brainiac in a fat body surrounded by skinny, rich debutantes. She never fit in until she discovered the magic of theater and cinema, where she fell in love with storytelling and found her place as a filmmaker.

Jamie graduated summa cum laude from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in screenwriting and earned her MFA in Film & TV Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. In Hollywood, she cut her teeth working with directors like Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen) and Justin Simien (Dear White People). She’s directed and produced content for Disney-ABC and music videos for artists, including Lady Gaga. Most recently, Jamie helmed the award-winning web series The Filth and served as an adjunct professor at USC. Fight on!

Outside of film, David is a music aficionado. He hosted a jazz and blues show for WHRB 95.3 in Boston. He’s also a walking encyclopedia of sports knowledge. It’s so bad that Jamie has had to learn sports, too…a fact that still blows her family’s minds when she breaks out stats at holiday gatherings. She also geeks out over graphic design, AI, and science books.

Together, David and Jamie craft stories about colorful, complicated, and unconventional characters on journeys of self-discovery inspired by their own adventures finding themselves. Their work is infused with wit, elegance, rich style, and a deep sense of humanity, reflecting the couple’s battles through adversity and their family sagas. They continue to pour their hearts into their storytelling, driven by the belief that filmmaking is not just a passion—but their purpose.

Why Ten Tortugas?

When we got engaged, David popped the question on the Bow Bridge in Central Park—an iconic location from some of our favorite movies. Right after Jamie said, “YES!” we looked down and saw ten turtles gathered on the lake shore.

It was a sign! Turtles are symbols of longevity, persistence, and wisdom. We try to bring the same to all our creative endeavors. We write scrappy characters battling long odds. And like us (and turtles) our characters never give up.

Thus, “Ten Tortugas” was born.
